JOHESU members have made great sacrifices during their strike since the middle of November. The strike must continue and also be extended! The promised extension of the strike to state level workers must be implemented. The NLC protests of 17th December begin to show the wider solidarity that may be possible!

To win, JOHESU needs more co-operation and solidarity from the other health trade unions and the wider trade union movement. It also needs more publicity including town hall meetings and explaining its case at more trade union meetings.

The NLC and the TUC are in solidarity with the JOHESU strike. The NLC state level protests on 17th December were at least partly a show of support for the JOHESU strike. This shows the potential for further solidarity action.

The Registered Doctors have said they will return to strike action on Monday,12th January. This will greatly increase the impact of the JOHESU strike.

The Government shows no intention of keeping to its promises to implement CONHESS. The Presidential Committee is not to report until an unspecified date in the New Year. The strike must continue until at least the report of this committee is received.

We have to force Federal and state governments to spend more on health to allow all trade unionists to have access to proper health care. In November, the Ministry of Health admitted that 850,000 children of five and under die each year in Nigeria of treatable diseases-this is the scale of the suffering that the JOHESU strike has to begin to end.

Solidarity until victory!!

In solidarity!

Comrade Abiodun Olamosu,

General Secretary, Socialist Labour
